![]() Being the smallest guy of the group, Curt was delegated the nasty job of digging the round hole in the ground, which had to be about eight feet deep and two feet in diameter. This is the type of hoist that was used during the 1960s in service stations, and it required a round hole to be dug in the dirt floor to accommodate the hoist's piston. One piece of equipment they were proud to own was an air-over-hydraulic floor hoist. Curt and his wife (to be) Janet's cousin, Paul, and Curt's best friend from high school, Sam, all helped John finish his building. One brother built a nice house on his property, and John built a 30' by 40' cinder block building, with plans of building racecars in it. ![]() John and his brothers were given, by their parents, city lots in Fridley, Minnesota. He raced at the local tracks and did very well, and always talked about wanting to go IMCA racing. Curt knew John from school and from when Curt and some friends rented an old barn, and John would stop by once in a while. In the conservative 1960s, he may not have been the kind of guy you wanted to take home to your mother. He drank and smoked and was well known for his daredevil driving and speeding. John Tiller was genuinely a very nice guy once you got to know him, but he portrayed the classic 'bad guy' image in school. He then graduated to motorized go carts, and then to mini-bikes and finally to racing cars. He raced peach crates that he put on lawnmower wheels and used a broom stick and car steering wheel for the steering. Curt began his racing career in the back alleys of Minnesota.
